Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, if you’re driving in Oklahoma, you need to know the state’s driving laws. Laws can vary from state to state in important ways, and new laws are passed every year. To avoid trouble – and a ticket – brush up on the rules of the road in the Sooner State.
In Oklahoma, an arrest for drunk driving can result in fees and fines adding up to more than $10,000, along with jail time and license revocation.
If you are caught driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, you could be charged with the following:
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
- Driving While Impaired (DWI)
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Under 21
- Aggravated Driving Under the Influence
- Child Endangerment
Some charges, including DWI and DUI Under 21, are possible even if you BAC is under .08.
Texting while driving is illegal in Oklahoma as of November 1, 2015. If you text while driving, you could get a $100 ticket – or even worse, cause an accident. Commercial drivers and public transit drivers are also prohibited from making calls using hand-held while driving.
Oklahoma has implemented a Graduated Driver License program for drivers between the ages of 15 and 18.
Teens who are at least 15.5 years old can qualify for a learner permit, which allows them to drive between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. if a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old is in the car. Before getting a learner permit, teens must pass a driving exam and a vision exam.
Teen who are at least 16 years old can qualify for an intermediate license. They must have held their permit for at least six months. Additionally, they need to have 50 hours of supervised driving practice, 10 hours of which must be at night, and they must pass a driving skills exam. They can’t have any traffic convictions.
The intermediate license comes with restrictions. Drivers are not allowed to drive between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. except under certain circumstances, and they cannot have more than one passenger who does not live with them unless they are accompanied by a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old.
Drivers can get an unrestricted license after six months with no traffic convictions, or when they turn 18.
Oklahoma drivers need to carry liability auto insurance. In Oklahoma, the minimum insurance limits are:
- $25,000 for death and injury per person
- $50,000 for death and injury per incident involving two or more people
- $25,000 for property damage
In order to protect your car, your assets and your passengers, you may want to purchase additional insurance coverage, including uninsured motorist coverage, collision insurance and comprehensive insurance.
Additional Rules and Resources
Do you know the rules for stopping for school buses? Oklahoma drivers must stop for school buses with flashing lights or a stop sign. And don’t think you can get away with passing a bus if there are no cops around. It’s dangerous, for one thing, and a new law that allows cameras on school buses means you could still get a ticket.
Or what about Oklahoma’s keep right laws? As of 2017, Oklahoma has a law that restricts when you can drive in the left lane.
There are too many laws to cover in one article. For detailed information on driving laws in Oklahoma, visit the website of the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and review a copy of the Oklahoma Driver’s Manual.
